Havana, March 31 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez on Thursday conveyed his congratulations and recognition to Alicia Bárcena, who concluded her term serving as Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

On Twitter, the Cuban foreign minister highlighted Ms. Bárcena’s tireless dedication and exceptional contribution to development and well-being of the peoples in the Americas for nearly 14 years.

“We appreciate her permanent cooperation with Cuba,” Mr. Rodríguez tweeted.

As of April 1, Ms. Bárcena will be succeeded in her position on an interim basis by Argentine economist Mario Cimoli, who has been serving as ECLAC Deputy Executive Secretary since 2018. Alicia Bárcena took on the position on July 1, 2008, appointed by former UN Secretary-General (UNSG) Ban Ki-moon, becoming the first woman to hold such a position.

In this role, she led ECLAC´s work as a center of excellence and research applied to public policies on sustainable development, a forum for regional intergovernmental dialogue, and a provider of technical cooperation to the countries.
