Cuba's Institute of Information and Social Communication (ICS) has announced the first edition of the National Social Communication Award, to be granted in January 2025, a source of the entity published today.

This award is the highest distinction ICS will grant annually to Cuban citizens, active or retired, in recognition of their performance in the field of communication, the institute’s website reported.

The Award will acknowledge a life’s work in the fields of organization, media and community fields, as well as in processes related to training, upgrading and research.

As a follow-up to the recently concluded International Meeting of Communication Scholars and Researchers (ICOM 2024), ICS First Vice-President, Onelio Castillo, said that the award is consistent with the regulations of the organization.

The decoration will encourage society to acknowledge professionals in journalism and social communication in general, whose work is characterized by its integrity, high creative value and public impact, said Castillo.

The award also responds to the provisions of Agreement 9684 of the Council of Ministers, dated September 5, 2023, which updated the procedure to grant awards in the country’, said the ICS first vice-president.

Award nominations will be forwarded by all entities at different levels of the ICS, the Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC), the Cuban Association of Social Communicators (ACCS) and the nation’s university centers.
