Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero on Friday recalled the legacy of student leader Julio Antonio Mella (1903-1929) on the 95th anniversary of his death.

On his X profile, Marrero quoted Mella’s last words when he was assassinated in Mexico, “I die for the Revolution.”

“Student leader, tireless fighter. His legacy, of a profound anti-imperialist nature, is today an example to follow for the new generations of Cubans,” the head of Government highlighted on the platform.

Mella, founder of the University Students Federation (FEU) and one of the participants in the creation of the first Communist Party of Cuba in August 1925, is considered one of the emblematic figures within the revolutionary process in Cuba in the first half of the 20th century.

At the age of 26, on January 10, 1929, he was assassinated in Mexico on order from Cuban dictator Gerardo Machado, but in his short life he developed an intense political life, especially within the framework of the students’ struggles at the University of Havana.
