Cuban President evoked Simon Bolivar’s legacy

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel today evoked the legacy of Simón Bolívar, while celebrating the 240th anniversary of his birth.

On twitter lines, the head of state shared some verses from the the poem “A song for Bolívar”, written in 1941 by the Chilean poet and Nobel Prize winner for Literature, Pablo Neruda.

“I met Bolívar one long morning, in Madrid, at the mouth of the Fifth Regiment; Father, I told him, are you or aren´t you or who are you? And looking at the Mountain Barracks, he said: I wake up every hundred years when the people wake up,” the president wrote on the social network.

Simón José Antonio de la Santísima Trinidad Bolívar Palacios Ponte y Blanco was born on July 24, 1783 in Caracas, Venezuela, the son of Juan Vicente Bolívar and María Concepción Palacios.

His intelligence, will and self-sacrifice, were qualities that stood out in his personality and together with his ideals of independence from Spain led him to give 20 years of his life to the liberation of countries such as Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela.

For this reason, history distinguishes him as the “liberator of America” whose ideas, in the case of Cuba, found the greatest expression in the thought and work of the Cuban National Hero José Martí.
