Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel congratulated the country's tank crew members on their day on Tuesday, in the context of the revolutionary victory against mercenaries supported by the United States in 1961.

The president tweeted that the anniversary is a tribute to the heroic fighters who pushed back the invaders at Playa Giron (Bay of Pigs), in the south-central part of Cuba.

The tanks of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) were heavily involved in the actions on the second day of confrontations with the enemy. The historic leader, Fidel Castro, had ordered to obstruct and dislodge the aggressors, combining infantry with tank attacks and the support of the anti-aircraft force.

The Cuban combatants responded with ferocity and courage.

As a result, in 72 hours, the Cuban forces regained control of the territory and arrested hundreds of mercenaries, who were supported by the White House.

It was the United States’ first major defeat in Latin America.
