Havana, April 19 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel on Tuesday recalled the victory of the Cuban Revolution on the sands of Playa Girón, on April 19, 1961.

In a message on the social network Twitter, the president recalled a phrase of the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, who in 1965 said that "the historical importance of April 19 goes beyond the framework of our own country, because that day, certainly that Yankee imperialism received its first great defeat in America".

In the same space, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez evoked another phrase of Fidel on the anniversary in which he highlighted the role of the Cuban people in the defense of their country.

"They underestimated our people, they miscalculated (...) there is something that their computers could not calculate, and that was: the dignity, the morale and the revolutionary spirit of our people. Because it was the spirit of the people that crushed the invaders", said Fidel in April 1965.

The aggression orchestrated from the United States was repelled in about 66 hours with the participation of all sectors of the Cuban people, which demonstrated for the first time that it was possible to defeat the most powerful imperialism in history and filled with hope the Latin American peoples submerged in dictatorships supported by Washington.

In the early hours of April 17, 1961, the mercenaries disembarked at Playa Giron and Playa Larga in the Bay of Pigs certain of victory.

But two days later, on April 19, 1961, those who survived surrendered to the Cuban troops without being able to agree to a saving reembarkation or the miraculous appearance of the US Marines and aviation.

Then followed the revolutionary trial of the invaders and the U.S. government was forced to pay a war indemnity for the material damages caused to Cuba during the invasion, something that happened for the first time.
