Intellectuals from the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) are debating their participation and role in decision-making processes within the cultural field.
This phase of meetings with creators began on January 22 in the eastern Cuban province of Granma with the purpose of giving participation to the artists of that organization in decision-making processes in the cultural field.
The collective construction of the work platform within the UNEAC for the next five years is another of the objectives of the meeting.
During the first debate, UNEAC President Marta Bonet highlighted the essential nature of the analyses to be carried out throughout the country during the first months of the year.
It is vital to listen to all members, because even though their participation in the assemblies prior to the conclave at different levels was significant, we must contribute more to the improvement of the spiritual fabric of the country, in a very difficult context for Cuba, Bonet explained.
She assured that the renewal itself within the UNEAC will contribute to projects, forums and participation of creators in cultural life being more proactive.
Issues such as the economic blockade against Cuba, the vocation of social service, the contributions of creators in the battle against cultural colonization or the role in the defense of genuine art will be addressed in these assemblies, Bonet commented.
The maxim of the great Cuban intellectual Fernando Ortiz, “Culture is the Homeland,” will continue to guide the organization and we must assume it as a transmission pulley of shared values, being a key piece for the construction of a better society, the UNEAC president said.
Singer songwriter Eduardo Sosa, national vice president of the institution, attends each of these meetings in the eastern region, where dialogue focused on the training of new generations through workshops and theoretical forums. This teaching for the youngest is aimed, among other players, at artistic level centers, the use of new technologies to promote indigenous values and community cultural work, topics that marked the discussions of the 10th UNEAC Congress in November 2024.
