Havana, Apr 21 (Prensa Latina) Cuba's top-level scientific and academic institutions will participate, alongside entities from Germany and several Latin American nations, in a center for the management of emerging diseases, the Foreign Ministry informed on Wednesday.

The University of Havana, the Ministry of Public Health, the Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries Group (BioCubaFarma), the Finlay Vaccine Institute and the Center for Research and Development of Medicines will be part of the initiative.

According to the Cubaminrex website, the Latin American-German Center for Research and Training in Infections and Epidemiology (known as Glacier) will contribute to improve the response to the diseases arising in the Latin American and Caribbean region.

The multidisciplinary society of experts and leaders in pandemic and virology studies aims at strengthening infectious disease surveillance, diagnosis, treatment resistance and the formulation of new vaccines and therapies, the source referred.

In addition, the project aims at creating a capacity building program that includes research and learning, based on prevention.

Glacier will be funded by the German Foreign Office and will initially run until 2025, with the possibility of being extended for another five years.
