Cuba has not reported any serious Oropouche Fever cases or deaths since the virus was detected here in May. Some 506 cases were detected, the lowest figure in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Cuba’s Hygiene and Epidemiology director, Dr. Francisco Duran told reporters in Havana that the virus is present in all 15 Cuban provinces, with 80 percent of suspicious cases staying in their home for not presenting clinical symptoms related to Oropouche fever.

Recent studies in Brazil evidenced serious complications of the virus: encephalitis, meningitis, mother-to-child transmission, abortion, fetal death and other consequences.
In Cuba, Oropouche cases have only been related to meningitis, with satisfactory recovery, said the Doctor.

Dr. Duran said that there are no vaccines or anti-viral drugs to fight Oropouche fever, but only treatments to relieve the symptoms.
