The Cuban women’s softball team defeated El Salvador 6–0 today in the opening game of the Super Round at the Pan American Championship taking place in this city.
After going undefeated in their four group-stage games, the Cuban squad entered this phase with two wins already counted against teams that also advanced, and now holds a perfect 3–0 record on their path toward medal contention.
At Luis Escobar Pocaterra Stadium, Yarianna López opened the scoring with an RBI double in the first inning, then added to the tally in the third with a single to left field that brought in another run.
Two more runs came in the fifth inning on bases-loaded walks issued by starting pitcher Mia Montes, who took the loss. In the sixth, López delivered again with another two-run double, sealing the final score.
Meanwhile, pitcher Yamerki Guevara delivered a commanding performance from the circle, working five scoreless innings with minimal trouble. The Santiago native allowed only three hits and struck out seven batters during her outing.
Her reliever, Anisley López, recorded the final six outs, including one on a difficult play, to secure the shutout.
Later this Monday, in the final game of the day, Cuba is scheduled to face host nation Colombia at 9:30 p.m. local time at Juan Gabriel Amín Manzur Stadium.
Already qualified for the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, the Cuban team is now aiming to claim one of five available spots for a stage of the Women's Softball World Cup and one of six berths for the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima.
