Cuba's permanent representative to the United Nations (UN), Pedro Luis Pedroso, said in New York that the largest Antillean Island is committed to expanding cooperation ties with UNICEF for the comprehensive development of children.

At the first regular session of the Executive Board of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the diplomat reiterated that the Cuban government has that responsibility in a context marked by the application of the U.S. economic, commercial and financial blockade and by the challenge of facing the socioeconomic consequences of the COIVD 19 pandemic.

Pedroso said that collaboration with that UN agency was fundamental during the immunization campaign against COVID-19 when the acquisition of refrigeration equipment and syringes contributed to Cuba being the first country in the world to immunize its vaccinable pediatric population.

He said that since last year work has been carried out on projects to improve and perfect the technical capacities of health professionals in vaccination, maternal and child health, hygienic-sanitary measures, as well as in the diagnosis and attention to complications of infectious diseases.

The Cuban representative to the UN emphasized that the comprehensive protection of children continues to be a priority policy in his country, which continues to make progress in the promotion and protection of the rights of children and adolescents.
