Havana, Jun 2 (Prensa Latina) Cuba was recognized on Thursday as a safe and sustainable destination after a meeting held between the Cuban delegation attending the Stockholm+50 International Conference and the representative of the World Tourism Organization (WTO).

The Minister of Science, Technology and Environment, Elba Rosa Perez, who heads the Cuban mission, revealed in a message posted on social media how the executive director of the WTO, Zoritsa Urosevic, praised the attractions of Cuba and its potential to promote sustainable tourism.

During the meeting held in the Swedish capital, which the Cuban official described as profitable, Urosevic extended an invitation to the island to join the Glasgow Declaration on climate action in tourism.

As part of her agenda, Perez also spoke with the executive secretary of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, Elizabeth Maruma Mrema.

During the meeting, the Cuban delegation shared with the rest of the attendees the results of the national referendum carried out on the island in order to promote the debate to bring about solutions in the environmental field.

In a panel held prior to the Conference, the Cuban minister called for a change in the unsustainable production and consumption patterns prevailing in today’s world.

She urged to devise new policies, greater use of science and innovation, and the availability of means of implementation, especially financing and capacity building.
