Cuba reaffirmed today its commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women.
During her participation in the World Women’s Summit, Teresa Amarelle Boué, Secretary General of the Federation of Cuban Women, referred to the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, adopted by 189 countries 30 years ago.
She emphasized that over the past three decades, Cuba has upheld equality as a key pillar of women’s empowerment, despite the impact of coercive measures imposed by the United States government.
Amarelle noted that women represent 56.7 percent of the members of Parliament, 53 percent of the workforce in science, and 80 percent of prosecutors and judges, positioning the country as a global reference in gender equality.
She affirmed that public policies implemented on the island have consolidated social achievements under the principle of leaving no one behind, viewing equity not only as a right but also as an essential condition for sustainable development with social justice.
Amarelle also used the setting of this World Women’s Summit to reiterate Cuba’s call to the international community in favor of peace and against military campaigns that particularly affect women.
The Cuban leader further highlighted the importance of China’s leadership and the global initiatives promoted by President Xi Jinping in defense of the principles of international law and cooperation among nations.
She reaffirmed the commitment of the Communist Party of Cuba, the Cuban Government, and the Federation of Cuban Women to strengthen, together with the Communist Party of China and the All-China Women’s Federation, the building of a Community with a Shared Future.
In fact, the theme of this World Women’s Summit is “A Shared Future: Accelerating the New Process for the Comprehensive Development of Women.”
Around 800 guests from 110 countries, regions, and international organizations are participating in this two-day event held in the Chinese capital.
The meeting reviews the achievements and pending issues of the Fourth World Conference on Women, held in Beijing in 1995.
That historic event marked a milestone in the promotion of women’s rights and laid the foundation for international cooperation on gender equality in the 21st century.
