Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez ratified today the island's policy of zero tolerance for drug production, consumption and trafficking.

In his Twitter account, the Foreign Minister of this Antillean nation affirmed his country will never be used as a deposit, transit or destination of any type of these illicit substances.

Today is the International Day of the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking, approved by the United Nations (UN) in 1987 with the purpose of raising awareness on the subject and promoting the fight against this scourge.

According to that multilateral organization, around half a million people died in 2019 from causes directly related to drug use, a figure similar to those of 2018, but double that of a decade ago.

In this period, consumption also increased by 22 percent, according to the most recent UN World Drug Report.

The increase in the number of deaths is due to the fact that drug use has become more harmful, as there are more available and they are more powerful, the study pointed out.
