Havana, Dec 1 (ACN) Cuban deputy foreign minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio questioned on Thursday the US administration’s spoken promise to provide Cubans with Internet connections and their alleged concern for the Cuban people’s wellbeing.
De Cossio rejected the recent suggestion by the US Department of Justice to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to deny the permit to hook Cuba to a first underwater telecommunications cable.
On his Twitter account, the Cuban government official criticized the US manner to put in practice its open concern about the wellbeing of the Cuban people, whom they severely punish with the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed for over 60 years now.
According to the US Department of Justice, the US government represents a counterintelligence threat to the United States and, given the fact that that Cuba’s Telecom company ETECSA would manage the system of cables connecting the island, Havana could access sensitive information in the United States travelling on that cable.
The US Department of Justice added that if such a connection is established, other foreign adversaries allied of Cuba like China and Russia would pose a risk to Washington.
The underwater cable system ARCOS-1 USA Inc. requested authorization from the FCC to provide a connection to Cuba. This network connects 15 countries of the region, including Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Nicaragua and Mexico.
