Cuba Condemns Opening of Detention Center in Florida

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla denounced today the recent opening of the Alligator Alcatraz detention center in Florida, backed by anti-Cuban political sectors.
In a post on social media platform X, Rodríguez Parrilla emphasized that the support given by Cuban-American legislators to this facility exposes their betrayal of their constituents in exchange for thousands of dollars from anti-immigrant lobbying groups and the favor of the U.S. government.
"The opening of the Alligator Alcatraz detention center in Florida, with the support of anti-Cuban politicians, demonstrates their betrayal of voters in exchange for thousands from anti-immigrant lobbies and U.S. government approval," the Foreign Minister stated. He further stressed the urgent need to respect the rights of detained migrants.
Multiple voices have demanded protections for migrants held at the facility, which was established amid increasing hostility toward migration flows—primarily from Latin America and the Caribbean.
Alligator Alcatraz, inaugurated this Tuesday, is seen as part of the current U.S. administration's crackdown on immigration. Located in a remote area of Everglades National Park, roughly 60 kilometers from Miami, the center was constructed in just one week on a disused airstrip using tents and trailers typically deployed after natural disasters.
Cuba's condemnation aligns with broader concerns over the treatment of migrants and the influence of hardline immigration policies in the U.S. The facility's rapid setup and isolated location have drawn criticism from human rights advocates.
