Havana, Dec 30 (Prensa Latina) Cuban health authorities on Wednesday strengthened health protocols and studies to detect Covid-19 cases in light of an increase in the number of patients in December.

In a press briefing, Dr. Francisco Duran, director of Epidemiology at the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), said that December has faced the highest number of Covid-19 cases (2,824) since the outbreak of the pandemic across the country.

'The average number of confirmed patients is 108.6 per day and 1,479 cases with autochthonous contagion, and 1,345 from abroad have been detected,' he explained.

Likewise, he stated that the highest levels of transmission have been reported in Havana, Santiago de Cuba, Matanzas, Artemisa and Pinar del Río provinces.

With such figures, he said, Cuba maintains and strengthens the corresponding health protocols to deal with Covid-19 cases and detect the possible largest toll of infected people.

'Times are complex, because there is still no perception of risk, especially on these holidays, where so many relatives come from abroad and sometimes the health measures are neglected,' he stressed.

The expert reiterated that given a possible second outbreak of infections and the increased number of infected people associated with Cuban citizens from the United States, Mexico and Panama, Cuban health and airport authorities will reduce the entry of travelers from those nations as of January 1, 2021.

He also pointed out that as starting on January 10, 2021, all people who arrive in the country must produce a negative real-time PCR test done 72 hours earlier in an internationally certified lab.

Dr. Duran stressed that there is experience in facing the pandemic, which makes it possible for Cuba to be rated 124th on the list of nations affected by the new coronavirus.
