Cuba affirms need to maintain Latin America as a zone of peace

Havana, Sep 7 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez today reaffirmed the need to maintain Latin America as a zone of peace, since it is the only way to confront the Monroe Doctrine that the United States is trying to impose.

In his Twitter account, the Foreign Minister pointed out that the Proclamation signed by the Heads of State and Government of the region, in January 2014, has among its essentials to observe the principles of national sovereignty, equal rights and self-determination of peoples.

Respecting that commitment, he said, is the only way to confront the Monroe Doctrine that Washington intends to impose.

The Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Peace Zone was established by the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) during the celebration of the second summit of that organization, held in Havana.

The document indicates that the nations of the area will work permanently for the peaceful solution of the controversies, 'in order to banish forever the use and threat of the use of force.'

Likewise, it ratifies the responsibility of the States not to intervene, directly or indirectly, in the internal affairs of others; as well as to foster relations of friendship and cooperation, regardless of the differences between their political, economic and social systems or their levels of development.
