Colombian Vice President Rejects Trump's Threats Against Petro

Colombian Vice President Francia Márquez today rejected the repeated intimidations made by Donald Trump against President Gustavo Petro.

In a message published on her account on the social network X, the Vice President stated that this constitutes a threat to democracy, national sovereignty, peace, and international law. She emphasized that Colombians elected the current government to lead the people toward social justice, equity, the care for life, dignity, and peace.

“This popular mandate, under no circumstances, can be transgressed by foreign political and economic interests. I call on the Colombian people and the international community to defend our sovereignty. We continue working with our hearts in the right place until dignity becomes customary,” she stated in her pronouncement.

Yesterday afternoon, from Air Force One, Trump made comments that later prompted an angry response from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the South American nation.

“Colombia is also very sick and is run by a sick man who likes to do cocaine and send it to the United States, and he's not going to be doing it much longer,” the Oval Office occupant declared to journalists.

When questioned about whether that statement implied an armed operation, the U.S. President responded, “that sounds good to me.”

In response, the Colombian Chancellery expressed its "most energetic rejection."

It considered that Trump's statements “ignore the fundamental principles governing relations between sovereign States and are incompatible with the respect owed to the democratic institutionalism of Colombia.”

It also emphasized that any statement that seeks to discredit, directly or indirectly, the President, who was democratically elected, constitutes undue interference in internal affairs, contrary to the norms of international law.
