Chinese President Xi Jinping urged Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to invigorate the comprehensive strategic partnership and bring stability to a world undergoing profound changes.

During his meeting with Sánchez, Xi Jinping emphasized that the friendship between the two countries is based on common interests and long-term benefits, and urged both sides to consolidate mutual support on sovereignty issues and key concerns, and to seize the opportunities offered by sectors such as renewable energy, high-tech manufacturing, and smart cities.

Regarding relations with the European Union (EU), Xi affirmed that China considers the bloc an important pillar in a multipolar world and proposed working together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Beijing and the EU with the aim of promoting a partnership based on peace, growth, reform, and civilization, which he described as even more relevant in the current circumstances.

Xi Jinping emphasized there are no winners in the tariff war, and that going against the world is isolating itself. “For more than 70 years, China’s development has always been based on self-reliance and hard work, never relying on anyone’s gifts, much less fearing any unreasonable repression,” he emphasized.

According to the president, regardless of how the external environment changes, China will strengthen its confidence, maintain its resolve, and focus on managing its own affairs well. “China and the EU are the world’s leading economies and firm supporters of economic globalization and free trade,” he added.

In the president’s view, both sides must jointly defend the trend of economic globalization and the international trade environment, and jointly resist unilateral intimidation.

Sánchez, for his part, highlighted the 20 years of respectful and friendly cooperation between Spain and China as part of the comprehensive strategic partnership. He expressed Madrid’s commitment to the “one China” policy and its interest in deepening cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, technological innovation, and green energy.

Sánchez also stressed the importance of strengthening cultural and educational ties, as well as maintaining a common stance on global challenges such as climate change and poverty. “The EU adheres to open free trade, is committed to defending multilateralism, and opposes the unilateral imposition of tariffs. There will be no winners in a trade war,” he emphasized.

China recently defended the success of its relations with Spain in the face of US criticism of this bilateral rapprochement.
