China's sports authorities demand safety after marathon deaths

This weekend, 21 of 172 participants in a mountain marathon died in a rural area in northwestern Gansu province due to the sudden fall of hail, freezing rain and gales that struck a 30-kilometer high-altitude section of the race.
Asian ultramarathon champion Liang Jing and Paralympic star Huang Guanjun died in the incident. Eight runners suffered from injuries.
Earlier, on May 4, a runner died of hypothermia in a competition in the Wumeng Mountains of Southwest China's Yunnan Province, and on May 6, a company manager died of cardiac arrest while participating in the Gobi Challenge.
On Sunday afternoon, a women's trail running in East China's Zhejiang Province was called off by the organizers due to the roads were muddy due to the rain.
All these events have caused commotion and concern among citizens, some pointing out poor preparation by the organizers and failures in logistics.
