Beijing Condemns US Executive Order Targeting Cuba's Oil Supplies
China today strongly rejected "any inhumane action or practice that deprives the Cuban people of their right to survival and development," in response to the recent Executive Order by US President Donald Trump.
In reply to a question from Prensa Latina, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun reiterated Beijing's firm support for the island "in resolutely defending its national sovereignty and security." The spokesperson also underscored the Asian giant's opposition to foreign interference in the affairs of the largest of the Antilles.
Earlier this week, Guo Jiakun urged Washington "to stop depriving the Cuban people of their right to survival and development, to stop undermining regional peace and stability, to end violations of international law, and to immediately lift the blockade and sanctions against Cuba."
Furthermore, he affirmed that China will continue to provide support and assistance to the Caribbean nation and expressed confidence that, "under the firm leadership of the Cuban Party and Government, the Cuban people will undoubtedly overcome their current difficulties."
Context of the US Executive Order
US President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order the day before declaring a national emergency and establishing a process to impose tariffs on goods from countries that sell or supply oil to Cuba.
The measure—a further tightening of the more than six-decade-long blockade aimed at suffocating the Cuban people—is part of the Trump administration's current policy of maximum pressure against Cuba and attempts to justify itself with US national security and foreign policy interests.
Cuban Foreign Minister's Condemnation
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla condemned "in the strongest terms" the new escalation against his country.
"Now it proposes to impose a total blockade on fuel supplies to our country and, to justify it, relies on a long list of lies that attempt to present Cuba as a threat that it is not," the Chancellor denounced on the social network X.
Rodríguez warned that there is new evidence every day that "the only threat to the peace, security, and stability of the region, and the only malign influence, is that exercised by the US Government against the nations and peoples of Our America."
In this regard, the head of Cuban diplomacy pointed out that it is precisely the Washington Administration that attempts to subject the region's countries to its dictates, strip them of their resources, mutilate their sovereignty, and deprive them of their independence.
