In Camagüey, Against Cultural Colonization
especiales

From April 10-13, Camagüey province will host the first National Colloquium on Pride in Being Cuban, a meeting that will combine theoretical sessions, artistic presentations, and visits to historical sites such as the Guáimaro Mausoleum. Organized by UNEAC and the Provincial Directorate of Culture, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and other artistic entities, the meeting will address cultural colonization and its impact on identity, education, and cultural programming. The theoretical sessions will be held at the Santa Cecilia Convention Center, with the participation of prominent intellectuals and a stand from the Casa de las Américas publishing house.
The event will feature key figures in the country's cultural policy, such as Alpidio Alonso, Minister of Culture, and the national presidents of UNEAC and Hermanos Saíz Association. Guests include Abel Prieto and historian Ernesto Limia, who will discuss current cultural challenges. Experiences such as the House of Scenic Memory in Matanzas, the Golpe a Golpe project in Camagüey, and Aires de Bahía in Nuevitas will be presented, initiatives that reflect the impact of art on the community. According to Armando Pérez Padrón, president of UNEAC in Camagüey, the colloquium seeks to delve deeper into the relationship between culture and identity in contemporary Cuba.
Organizers consider the possibility of this colloquium becoming a recurring event, as a way to strengthen cultural resistance. In this regard, Pérez Padrón posed a central question: "What do we do to continue?" "Are we Cubans?" Kenny Ortigas Guerrero, provincial director of Culture, emphasized the importance of collective thinking in building the nation. The event will end on April 13 with the presentation of the Espejo de Paciencia award to the conga band Los Comandos, on its 80th anniversary, and a Rumbatá concert in Plaza de la Libertad.
