Although the final approval is still pending, boxing celebrates today its almost certain inclusion in the program of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The news traveled the world from the Greek town of Costa Navarino, where the executive board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) turned this recommendation into the culmination of the uncertainty generated.
The decision remains to be made official at an IOC session later this week, but it is considered a formal step, especially after IOC President Thomas Bach made public his considerations on the issue.
“I have full confidence that the session will approve it so that all boxers around the world will have the certainty of being able to participate in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games if their national federation is recognized by World Boxing,” he said.
World Boxing, created in 2023, already has 84 affiliated national federations and was provisionally recognized internationally by the IOC last February.
“This is a very significant and important decision for Olympic boxing and brings the sport one step closer to its reinstatement on the program,” said its head Boris Van der Vorst.
