The Chinese Government on Tuesday expressed its confidence in the contributions that the upcoming Summit of the Group of 77 (G-77) plus China, to be held in Cuba, will bring to the developing countries.
In response to a question from Prensa Latina, the Chinese Foreign Ministry underlined its support for Cuba as a pro tempore president of the group, and expressed its wish that the meeting would contribute to strengthening solidarity positively.
The Foreign Ministry also expressed optimism about the Summit and its ability to strengthen cooperation among developing countries to respond to common challenges.
Chinese diplomacy emphasized that the G-77 plus China is a cooperation mechanism that safeguards international justice and defends the common interests of its members.
Cuba called for the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the G-77 plus China, scheduled for September in Havana, under the theme “Current Development Challenges. Role of Science, Technology, and Innovation.”
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez said recently that the event would be indispensable amid the world’s multi-sectoral crisis.
Rodríguez added that it will be a significant event, given the processes that are taking place globally and will provide the underdeveloped countries with strategies in this order, especially in the context of the post-Covid-19 pandemic.
Cuba assumed the pro tempore presidency of the group in January 2023, the first time the Caribbean island has led this mechanism.
This year, Havana has hosted events related to the G-77 plus China, including meetings of the ministers of Education, Culture, and Tourism of its State members.
