Argentine President Alberto Fernández praised the results obtained by the Unión por la Patria (Union for the Homeland, UP) alliance, the leading force in the general elections.

We end an important democratic day with great joy. I congratulate Sergio Massa and embrace all the people who expressed themselves in the polls, Fernández wrote on the X platform, formerly Twitter.

According to preliminary results, the current economy minister obtained 36.6 percent of the votes and should face Javier Milei, leader of La Libertad Avanza (Liberty Advances, LLA), in a runoff on November 19.

Massa is the best prepared to guarantee a path of growth and equality for Argentina. The people are betting on defending work, education, health, and their rights, Fernández said.

This shows the great work he has done for the citizens’ welfare and the growth of that territory. The path of equality and social justice has won, he said.

More than 26 million Argentinian citizens (77.7 percent) participated in the elections on National Identity Day, four decades after the return to democracy following the end of the country’s last civil-military dictatorship (1976-1983).
