The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-People's Trade Agreement (ALBA-TCP) today expressed its solidarity with former Honduran president Manuel Zelaya, current target of a sophisticated defamation campaign.

This campaign seeks to tarnish the honorability of his successful leadership, which for over a decade led the people’s resistance against the dictatorship and the social struggles making way for the recovery of the Honduran democracy, ALBA-TCP said in a statement.

For more than 40 years of political life – the statement added – Zelaya has followed a course of selfless public service in favor of his country, as parts of the efforts that paved the path for him to become President in 2006.

Since then, Zelaya “has been persecuted for having had the audacity to promote the Law of Citizen Participation, which gave a voice to the Honduran people on matters that for decades were only decided by the political class, as well as for being courageous enough to promote the incorporation of Honduras into the Bolivarian Alliance,” the document emphasized.

After this, he brought his country back into the world arena, where he decisively contributed to the lifting of the offensive veto that the OAS had maintained for almost 50 years against Cuba, he added.

According to ALBA_TCP the current attacks on Zelaya’s rights, honor and good reputation, only add to those on his entourage and the government headed by President Xiomara Castro, amounting to a punishment for having disobeyed the dictates of the United States, both then and now.
