Port of Spain, Oct 30 (Prensa Latina) Panamanian Rodolfo Sabonge began his four-year term of office as Secretary-General of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) 'under circumstances we never thought we would meet.'

With this affirmation, Rodolfo Sabonge became the seventh ACS Secretary-General, with 26 Caribbean States members, plus a dozen associate members.

'Our culture is possibly the richest and most diverse in this world. In our Caribbean Sea, indigenous people and descendants of Africa, Europe and Asia met and created this mixture that has resulted in the great identity,' Sabonge said when assuming his new term.

Our rich DNA comes from around the world, he declared, taking over from June Soomer, from Saint Lucia.

The ACS Secretary-General term rotates among three subgroups: CARICOM (Caribbean Community), Group of Three (Colombia, Mexico and Venezuela), and Non-Aligned (Cuba, Dominican Republic and Panama).
