Beyonce Steals Show at VMAs, Honors Women, Black Lives Matter

Pop sensation Beyonce stole the show at the MTV Video Music Awards with a repertoire from her latest album “Lemonade," in a ceremony that was otherwise panned on social media for seeming to lack direction.

Her entire performance had political themes woven throughout, with the opener “Pray you Catch Me” seeing the singer being embraced by a Black man in a hoodie, in a tribute to teen-ager Trayvon Martin.

Beyonce arrived on the red carpet accompanied by the mothers of Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Oscar Grant and Eric Garner, all unarmed Black men killed by police or in Martin's case, by a racist vigilante.

The 15-minute set, which also featured the songs “Hold Up” and “Sorry,” closed with her headline-making track “Formation.”

Her performance of the song at the Super Bowl in January caused controversy for its references to the Black power movement. This most recent performance ended with dancers posing in the women's power symbol.

The crowd at New York City's Madison Square Garden responded with a long standing ovation.

Beyonce won a total of eight awards, including the top prize for video of the year for "Formation."

The politically charged video beat Adele's 2015 comeback single "Hello," Drake's "Hotline Bling," Justin Bieber's "Sorry" and Kanye West's sleeping nude celebrity look-alikes in "Famous."

She also won best female video and prizes for choreography, editing and long form video in the awards that are voted on by fans.
