Taylor Swift blamed for damaging habitat of endangered bird in New Zealand

Taylor Swift’s music video shoot could have crushed endangered bird nests, and animal advocates aren’t just going to shake it off.

The “Bad Blood” singer’s film crew was accused of driving too many production vehicles across Bethells Beach near Auckland, the home of endangered baby dotterels, according to reports.

There are only two breeding pairs and 1,700 dotterels left in New Zealand, Waitakere Ranges local board chair Sandra Coney told RadioNZ.

Cherokee Films was allowed to have two vehicles on the sand, but conservationists claimed the crew brought up to a dozen vans and off-road vehicles, which would disturb the nests.

She said they’re looking into whether the production company broke any other rules.

“For instance, they can only go on a certain part of the beach, they can only go at a certain speed and there should always be someone walking in front of the vehicles to make sure there are no dotterels in the way,” Coney said.

The film crew apologized for possibly endangering the rare birds, and defended Swift.

“Taylor Swift and her management team were in no way at fault and did not do anything that violated permits or ordinances,” Cherokee Films said in a statement.

They said that no dotterels were harmed in the making of Swift’s music video, and claimed the filming happened outside of the endangered bird’s breeding area. The pop star's film crew will also be making a donation to the dotterel breeding program.
