Austrian Airlines will start direct flights to Havana from Oct. 25 according to the official twitter account of the Cuban embassy in Austria.
The airline made such decision to celebrate the 70th anniversary of bilateral relations.
Cuba and Austria improved their relations in 2015. However, there is room for more expansion in the strengthening of such links according to both governments.
With this goal, the President of the Federal Republic of Austria, Heinz Fisher, paid official visit to Cuba last March, where he was welcomed by his counterpart Raul Castro.
The visitor also presided over an economic forum, which ended with the signing of a Memorandum of Collaboration in different fields of development.
During the meeting, entrepreneurs of both nations exchanged views on the possibilities to develop technologies focused on renewable energy, urban infrastructures, and information, among others.
Likewise, the president of the Federal Chamber of Economy of Austria praised Cuba’s chances to become one of the best sites in the Caribbean due to its economic condition, geography, and high-skilled population.
Meanwhile, Rodrigo Malmierca, minister of Foreign Trade and Investment of Cuba, noted that such forum was a vivid proof of the existing potential in the trade relations between the two countries.
Austrian entrepreneurs are present in Cuba in fields like rail technology, food industry, beverages, and mining and plastic industry.
Cuban products like sugar, tobacco, honey, and rum dominates Austria’s market.
