Cuba Defends Respecting Sovereignty at UN

Cuba stressed here today that respect for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, the right to self-determination and resolution conflict by diplomatic means, should be a priority.
"The imposition of unilateral coercive measures or sanctions which violate human rights, should be let aside," stressed Anayansi Rodríguez, Permanent Representative of the Caribbean island to the UN headquarters in this city.
Regarding the criticisms that have been made to Venezuela, remarked that "Cuba reiterates its full support and that of our people to the Bolivarian Revolution, the legitimate government of President Nicolas Maduro and the heroic sister nation of Venezuela '.
"Nobody has the right to intervene in the internal affairs of a state," said Rodriguez in her intervention at in the general discussion with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
She recalled that almost 10 years ago the Human Rights Council was created, in order to replace the old Commission, fall in total discredit to the politicization, double standards and selectivity prevailing.
Unfortunately, she said, such practices increasingly take root again in the deliberations of that body.
The diplomat explained that an example of this is the use of this issue and this debate to promote a discussion on the situation of human rights in the South. The lists of nations that have been criticized it in the interventions of certain delegations are a solid evidence.
"We recognize, that there are important challenges facing the High Commissioner and have taken note of the achievements and actions taken to face the challenges encountered," she said.
"At the same time, we reiterate that these challenges must be answered in a way that avoids the selectivity, politicization and double standards," she concluded.
