Cuba stands out in Latin America for its programs and policies for family care, Begoña Arellano, assistant representative in Cuba of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), said.

Doing more is even possible, the expert told Prensa Latina and referred to the need to legislate and create programs and public policies in search of greater protection to children, while she praised the Cuban program “Educa a tu hijo” (Educate your child) that accompany the parents in the education and care of children.

She considers important the days being prepared here to celebrate on May 15 the International Day of Family, as they will be spaces to reflect along with populations of several communities about the role of the family in Cuba, a country that has positive and high health and education indicators, the best in the region.

The family has a fundamental role in the protection and full development of children, while the United themselves have a very important role, as have the opportunity to strengthen families to enable them to fulfill this task, she said.

She called to prevent graps of discrimination of all kind from zero to five years, which stressed as very important to do it from a very early age.

Arellano noted that there are some challenges in the Latin American zone compared to the family, although several countries have done much to reduce poverty, but inequalities and inequities, violence against children, and above all that of gender that has a so negative effect in families even persist.

According to Soraya Alvarez, director of the Cuban Association of the United Nations (ACNU), the date was decided to be included in the Caribbean nation, whose celebration is established since 1994, because it was considered it is a fundamental issue and of interest for all society.
