The 168 Municipal Assemblies of the People's Power for a period of two and a half years were constituted on Wednesday, after the recent midterm elections in which 12,589 delegates of constituencies were elected.

The Secretary of the National Electoral Commission, Tomas Amaran, told ACN that starting from 10:00 a.m., and simultaneously in some of the territories, these representatives of the people will took up their posts in the aforementioned local government bodies and elected their presidents and vice presidents.

According to law, the nomination committee at this level nominated the delegates that, due to their merits and work done, were better to assume such leadership positions.

This important step in the electoral process is the continuation of the midterm elections of April, when more than seven million Cubans went to the polls to elect the 12,589 delegates by direct, secret vote.

The constitution of the Municipal Assemblies of People's Power is made in compliance with Articles 90 of the Constitution of the Republic of Cuba and 126 of Law No. 72 of October 23, 1992, Election Law.
