Cuba is attending here the Annual Meeting of the Cooperation Program of the European Union and Latin America on Drug Policies (Copolad, in Spanish) in which strategies and tools to fight trafficking are discussed.

The director of International Relations of the Ministry of Justice, Claudio Ramos, highlighted on the opening session Monday that Cuba's participation in Copolad has helped it to train specialists who are currently working in the National Commission on Drugs.

He added that for the island is of paramount importance to prevent consumption and fight the illegal trafficking of drugs, and it has been cooperating on this two matters even before it reached an agreement with the EU.

Mr. Ramos praised Copolad's work particularly because it does not only favor regional cooperation but also bilateral collaboration. The program -he said- is in debt though with the Caribbean as Copolad has not paid sufficient attention to issues which are of high priority for that region.

On that particular subject, he considered of great importance that Caribbean representatives attend the program's meetings.

Copolad's gathering under the auspice of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac, in Spanish) and the EU will last till Wednesday.

Argentina is also the venue of the 19th High Level Meeting of the Coordination and Cooperation Mechanism of Celac-EU on illicit drugs.
