The Pentagon estimates that the war against Iran has cost the United States $25 billion, primarily in munitions, since the start of the operation on February 28, a high-ranking Department of War official stated this Wednesday.
“As of today, we are spending approximately $25 billion on Operation 'Epic Fury.' The largest portion of that sum corresponds to munitions,” declared the Acting Undersecretary of War for Financial Affairs, Jules Hurst, during a hearing before the House of Representatives. Additionally, “a portion of that amount is allocated to operations and maintenance expenses, as well as equipment replacement,” he added.
The official assured that the Department of War will formulate a supplemental budget request through the White House to be submitted to Congress “once they have a complete assessment of the conflict's cost.”
The Pentagon shared a figure regarding war expenditures for the first time during a hearing to account for the Department's budgets before lawmakers, where Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Caine, appeared.
According to estimates from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), the first 100 hours of the war against Iran alone cost at least $3.7 billion, which translates to nearly $900 million per day.
For his part, Hegseth insisted on the justification for continuing the operation, as in his view, Iran has not yet abandoned its nuclear ambitions, and he downplayed the significance of the conflict's duration.
“I remind you how long we were in Afghanistan and how long in Vietnam. We have been immersed for barely two months in an existential struggle for the security of the American people. Iran cannot possess a nuclear bomb,” he noted.
Furthermore, he took the opportunity to lash out at those lawmakers who oppose the war, whom he considered the “greatest adversary” at this moment.
“The greatest challenge, the greatest adversary we face right now, are the reckless, ineffective, and defeatist words of the Democrats in Congress and some Republicans,” he criticized.
