Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva thanked his Cuban counterpart, Miguel Díaz-Canel, for his congratulatory message on his electoral victory and reaffirmed solidarity with the Caribbean island.

"Thank you very much for the message, President Miguel Díaz-Canel. We celebrate in Brazil a victory of democracy and regional integration," Lula wrote on the social network X.

He added that the South American giant reaffirms its solidarity with the Cuban people and their right to a future of peace, dignity, and development.

Lula's response followed Díaz-Canel's communication, in which he congratulated the Brazilian head of state on behalf of the Cuban government and people for the result of yesterday's presidential election runoff.

Díaz-Canel referred, on that microblogging platform, to Lula's triumph as a historic victory that guarantees the continuity of the path of peace, sovereignty, and social justice undertaken by the Brazilian people under his leadership.

He also expressed the island nation's willingness to accompany Brazil "in the construction of the unity and integration of our Great Homeland, Latin American and Caribbean."

In the runoff, Lula obtained 51.79 percent of valid votes against 48.21 percent achieved by Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, according to data from Brazil's Superior Electoral Court.

The victory will allow the president, of the Workers' Party, to continue at the head of the Executive for another four-year term, until 2031.

After the result became known, several rulers and political figures from Latin America and other regions of the world congratulated Lula, and the messages included references to democracy, integration, and bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

Brazil and Cuba celebrated in 2026 four decades since the reestablishment of their diplomatic relations.
