Under the title "Italy owes a debt to Cuba," the letter was also sent to Health Minister Orazio Schillaci, stating that these criminal U.S. actions "violate fundamental human rights and demand a global response."

Italian MEP Ilaria Salis expressed in a message posted on social media that this project, promoted by the "humane, visionary, and principled" doctors of this European nation, which already has some 1,000 signatures, is "an important solidarity initiative with Cuba that deserves the fullest support."

Salis, who traveled to Havana in March of this year as part of the European Convoy in support of the island, emphasized that "Italy cannot remain indifferent or silent, also because it owes a debt to Cuba for the help received during the Covid-19 pandemic and for the current work of Cuban doctors in the Calabria region."

"Over the decades, Cuba has built a healthcare system considered an international model, capable of guaranteeing universal access to health care even under conditions of limited resources," the statement emphasizes.

The text, published on the website of the specialized journal Scienza in Rete, notes that Cuba has the highest density of doctors in the world, with 8.4 per 1,000 inhabitants, and that "since 1963, more than 600,000 Cuban healthcare professionals have provided services in more than 160 countries, including Italy."

However, in violation of the principle of health neutrality enshrined in international humanitarian law and universal medical ethics, which requires that coercive economic measures not affect access to healthcare, the United States has intensified its aggressive policy against Cuba, severely impacting these services.

The blockade, tightened by US President Donald Trump, which includes actions against energy supplies, "deprives the island of fuel, electricity, and access to international markets for pharmaceuticals and medical devices," the letter points out.

Other specialized media outlets joined in, including Salute Internazionale, Epidemiologia e Prevenzione, and Recenti Progressi in Medicina, among others.

This open letter proposes that, after evaluating this serious problem, Italy schedule "specific, essential, and prioritized aid interventions" to support Cuba's health services.
