Cuban soprano and composer Bárbara Llanes is among the 20 pre-nominees for Best Original Music at the Platino Awards, thanks to her work on the Cuban-Italian co-production Baracoa, directed by Luis Ernesto Doñas.
The film also achieved pre-nomination in the Best First Feature category, consolidating its presence in the Ibero-American film landscape, reported the Cuban Institute of Music (ICM).
The score conceived by Llanes stands out for its creative versatility and the richness of its sound proposal, which partly determined her inclusion in the Platino Awards for Ibero-American Cinema—one of the most prominent film competitions and a driver of internationalization for Cuban, Mexican, Argentine, Brazilian, Colombian, and other Latin American productions.
From the incidental music accompanying the narration to the songs Caminos sobre el mar and Soy de corazón, with lyrics by playwright Norge Espinosa, the composer builds a musical universe that dialogues with the emotional and physical journey of the protagonists heading to Cuba's First City, the cultural institution highlights.
For the recording, Llanes brought together renowned performers at PM Records and Abdala studios, including Yasek Manzano, Rodrigo García, David Faya, Adrián Aguiar, and Daiana García, along with the Havana Chamber Orchestra.
The voices of Laritza Bacallao and María Victoria Rodríguez contribute a lyrical dimension that enriches the film's atmosphere, especially around the character of Estrellita, the analysis elaborates.
This pre-nomination confirms Bárbara Llanes' ability to expand the boundaries between academic music, contemporary creation, and cinematic language, strengthening her presence in the Ibero-American audiovisual scene.
