Cuba to Expand Meteorological Observation Network with UN Support

Cuba will strengthen its national meteorological observation network with financial and technical backing from the United Nations' SOFF fund, aiming to improve weather forecasting accuracy and climate resilience across the island.

Cuba will strengthen its national meteorological observation network to improve the quality and accuracy of weather forecasts, particularly in the face of extreme phenomena such as hurricanes.

This initiative will be supported by the United Nations' specialized fund, the Systematic Observations Financing Facility (SOFF), which was created to assist developing countries in modernizing their climate observation systems. Through this partnership, the island will gain access to financial and technical resources that facilitate the installation of new technologies and the upgrading of existing infrastructure.

According to a report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Cuba, the project — to be implemented by Cuba's Institute of Meteorology (Insmet) — includes the installation of one new surface station and two radiosonde stations, as well as the modernization of eight existing stations across the country.

For Insmet specialists, these technologies will yield more reliable data, which is essential for preparedness and decision-making in response to severe meteorological events. As experts note, every minute of advance warning in a forecast can mean lives saved and reduced economic losses.

The initiative also benefits from the technical advisory support of Spain's State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and the accompaniment of the UNDP, both of which regard the project as a decisive step toward strengthening the country's resilience against climate change and the Caribbean region's growing vulnerability to extreme weather events.

At present, bolstering observation and forecasting capacity is of strategic importance to the nation, as it contributes to protecting human lives, reducing economic losses, and ensuring the security of vital sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and energy.

In a context of economic constraints, access to more precise meteorological information also promotes efficient resource planning and enhances the resilience of vulnerable communities.

The modernization of the national observation network will optimize agricultural management by providing data that supports the planning of productive campaigns and the protection of crops against droughts and heavy rainfall. In the energy sector, early warning of extreme phenomena reduces risks in generation and distribution, while for the general population it translates into greater capacity for response and the protection of human lives.

In this way, the project represents a substantial contribution to the country's sustainable development and climate change adaptation. The cooperation among the organizations involved opens the door to more effectively integrating national data into global forecasting systems, thereby strengthening the Caribbean nation's response capacity and contributing to public safety and the protection of key sectors of the economy.
