Cuba dominated the judo qualifying tournament for the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo on Sunday, capturing six gold medals, four silver, and one bronze.

According to the Pan-American Confederation's information panel, the 15 members of the Cuban men's team (4-2-0) and women's team (2-2-1) led the field at the Central American and Caribbean Cup, held at the Vasco Núñez Convention Center at the Hotel Panamá in Panama City.

Behind the largest of the Antilles finished the delegations of Mexico (3-1-6), Colombia (2-4-5), the Dominican Republic (1-3-2), Venezuela (1-1-6), and Panama (1-1-3) — the six nations, out of 16 participating countries, that claimed at least one of the 14 titles contested on Sunday.

Cuba's gold medalists were Jonathan Charón in the 60-kilogram (kg) category, Orlando Polanco (66 kg), Marlón Herrera (73 kg), Andy Granda (+100 kg), Daili Sentmanat Despaigne (52 kg), and Anisleudys Ur López (70 kg).

Silver medals went to Naysdel Cardoso (90 kg), Iván Felipe Silva (100 kg), Maylín del Toro (63 kg), and Lianet Cardona (78 kg), while Dayanara Curbelo (+78 kg) took home the bronze.

Rubén Romero (81 kg) and Amado Montes de Oca (90 kg) finished fifth after competing for bronze, while Yainet Cardona (48 kg) and Lían Benavides (57 kg) concluded the tournament without medals. The full delegation was led by coaches Antonio Becali and Boennys Chang, heading the men's and women's squads, respectively.

Prior to departing for Panama, Becali told the Cuban News Agency that the team is also scheduled to compete for additional qualifying points at upcoming tournaments in Guatemala on March 28, and at the Senior Pan-American Championship on April 18 in Panama.

Becali, Chang, and their athletes are fully aware of the importance of performing well across all three tournaments, given that the Cuban delegation was absent from the three previous qualifying events for the Santo Domingo Games.

Judo remains one of the sports in which Cuba holds strong medal prospects heading into next summer's multi-sport competition in the Dominican capital.
