The Kane County Cougars were crowned champions of the Baseball Champions League of the Americas on Sunday, defeating the Diablos Rojos de México 7–3 in a game played at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú in Mexico City. The American squad recorded 12 hits to remain undefeated throughout the competition, claiming the trophy from the defending champions.
Dilon Thomas launched a solo home run in the opening inning to give the Cougars an early advantage. The bats went quiet on both sides until the fifth inning, when Bryan Antonio González tied the game with a home run of his own.
James Douglas Kaprielian, pitching for the hosts, and Konnor Ash, on the mound for the visitors, engaged in a compelling pitchers' duel, with both departing without a decision after leaving the score even.
The turning point came in the sixth inning, when the reigning American Association champions seized definitive control of the game by plating six runs. Two of those were driven in by a two-run home run from Claudio Finol off losing pitcher Justin Courtney, who absorbed the full damage of the inning.
Art Warren, the second reliever deployed by the Cougars' coaching staff, earned the victory despite retiring only two batters and allowing one run on an RBI double by José Marmolejos.
In the eighth inning, the Mexican side added another run to Derrick Cherry's ledger on an RBI double by Rio Ruiz, but the rally amounted to little more than cosmetic improvement on the scoreboard.
Behind the two finalists in the tournament's final standings were the Dantos de Managua of Nicaragua (2–2), the Cocodrilos de Matanzas of Cuba (1–3), and CTBC Brothers of Chinese Taipei (0–4).
