The Communist Party of Chile (PCCh) commended the widespread condemnation in the UN General Assembly of the blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba for more than six decades, currently exacerbated by an energy siege.

During the vote at the United Nations, 130 countries voted against that unilateral policy, only 17 supported it, and 25 abstained, reflecting the majority will of the international community in defense of sovereignty, peace, and the right to life, the PCCh noted.

In a statement released here, the party regretted, however, that the government of Chile broke a tradition of condemning that unjust policy by abstaining in the vote, which it said confirms its subordination to the United States.

The PCCh recalled that the blockade has human consequences of incalculable magnitude for Cuba, punishing the entire population without distinction of any kind. Aggression against Cuba is aggression against all of Latin America and the Caribbean, it warned.

The Socialist Party also deplored the Chilean government's alignment with the United States by abstaining from condemning the blockade, reversing a 33-year policy maintained across administrations of varying political background.
