Germany Willing to Negotiate with Athens If It Stays in Eurozone

A no vote would be “a clear decision against staying in the Eurozone,” Gabriel said in a joint press conference with Merkel after meeting with German party leaders and Finance Minister Wolfgang Schauble, who debriefed them about the negotiations with Greece.

Merkel noted that Germany does “not want to influence in any way” the opinion of Greek citizens, but acknowledged that it is her duty to discuss the possible consequences of their decision.

Merkel said talks were scheduled to continue on Saturday, but have since been discontinued after the Greek government decided to call a referendum on the offer of the Eurogroup.
