Washington, Oct 20 (Prensa Latina) Arrests of migrants by the Border Patrol soared to the highest levels ever recorded in 2021, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

According to The Washington Post, US authorities detained over 1.7 million migrants along the Mexico border during the 2021 fiscal year (between October 2020 and September 2021).

Most of the detained migrants came from Mexico (608,000), followed by 367,000 Haitians, Venezuelans, Ecuadorians, Cubans and other nationalities.

Border agents counted 309,000 arrests of undocumented Honduran migrants (279,000) Guatemalans (1000), and 96,000 Salvadorans.

Illegal crossings began rising last year but skyrocketed in the months after President Joe Biden took office in January, 2021.

A recent poll by The Associated Press - NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that only 35% of US citizens approved President Biden's move on immigration.
