Podemos Renews Govt.Offer with Spanish Socialist Party

Secretary General of Podemos, Pablo Iglesias, ratified today to King Felipe VI his offer to constitute a coalition government with the Spanish Socialist Workers'' Party (PSOE) and Izquierda Unida (United Left). In a press conference in the Congress of Deputies, Iglesias said he reiterated to the monarch the offer he made him 10 days ago during the first round of consultations with leaders of parties with parliamentary representation.

"Our proposal remains the same, an executive presided over by the leader of PSOE, Pedro Sanchez, with proportional representation and in which we would assume the vice presidency, said the young university professor at the end of his meeting with the king.

He ruled out, though, the possibility of a three-party alliance among the Socialists, Podemos and the central right group Ciudadanos (C's), arguing that the programs of the two latter formations are incompatible.

It is obvious that our economic projects are different enough to be able to coexist in a same society, he insisted.

It is not possible with Podemos and Ciudadanos at the same time, stressed Igleaisa, who asked Sanchez to choose between a progressive coalition or an agreement with the Conservative People's Party (PP) and C's.

"I don't want to put more pressure on you, but urge you to be brave and think that our country deserves a government of progress and change, and for that you can count on us," he added, referring to the refusal by some historical leaders of PSOE to cut a deal with the emerging group.

He revealed that the king conveyed a very sensible reflection about the process: when a candidate decides to ask for approval to the head of State to present him/herself to investiture, it is reasonable he/she has an advanced project.

It seems to me that this is not the case, said Iglesias in obvious reference to the situations of Sanchez and the PP leader, Mariano Rajoy who, as candidates of majority parties, failed to get the needed support to submit themselves to the confidence of Parliament.
