The European Union has welcomed the results of general elections in Turkey and hailed the 86 percent turn out as a clear sign of strength of the Turkish democracy.
Ruling Party Losses Absolute Majority in Turkish Elections
In a joint statement, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini and European Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn said "Turkey's general election on June 7 took place with a record 86 percent turn out, a clear sign of [the] strength of the Turkish democracy."
The text added that it is "particularly important" to note that all major political parties obtained representation in Parliament.
"We now look forward to the swift formation of a new parliament and government, and to working together closely. The coming period offers opportunities for further strengthening the EU-Turkey relationship and to advance in broadening EU-Turkey cooperation in all fields, for the benefit of all our citizens," read the EU statement.
Turkey emerges with a renewed political landscape since, even though the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) won with 40.8 percent of the votes, it lost the majority on parliament, which it has since it came to power in 2002.
