Venezuela had no trouble to assume its role of protagonist and defeated Cuba 73-52 in their debut at the FIBA Americas Championship. The differences between the South American champion and a young team that arrives with the aim of taking experience, were already felt from the first 5 minutes.

While the beginning of the game looked promising for Cuba, with a triple from Haiti that opened the scoring and for 3 minutes Venezuela did not score. Nestor Garcia’s team defensive posture was key for the game’s change of course. Cuba’s mistakes in attack, made Venzuela take advantage and run to a 9-0 to dominate the score and open an 11 point advantage (16-5). A double by Justiz (the first game for Team) closed the distance, but a new distraction in defense allowed Javinger Vargas to put a double for Venezuela to end the quarter winning 18-7.

Far from taking a breath with that advantage, the Venezuelan team maintained the defensive posture, running the court and scoring with ease. They put a 9-2 and went away by 18 (27-9). There they exaggerated with the launch of 3 pointers and that gave Cuba the chance to add and shorten the lead to 11 (27-16). Upset with what the team was giving, Garcia decided to leave in the court Gregory Vargas and brought back Jose Vargas, Colmenares, Cox and Guillent, creates a quick 7-0 in just one minute to regain the difference. Again Javigner Vargas appeared on the close of the first half with a triple and sent the lead to the maximum of 18 (39-21).

In the second half, the South Americans showed the differences between the teams. Cuba was surpassed in all areas of the court, it had trouble attacking the rim, virtually did not throw from the outside and this facilitated the task to their rival. Venezuela took a 20-point advantage at the end of the third quarter that remained until the last whistle of the game.

The top scorer for Venezuela, with 14 points was Guillent. For Cuba, Rivero was the leader in both points (10) and rebounds (7). Venezuela will have free day tomorrow and on Wednesday will face Puerto Rico, while Cuba will face the Puerto Ricans on the second day of the continental championship.
