VERACRUZ.- Filled with optimism and with the look of all of its members of being on the top of the awards podium, the first group of the Cuban delegation that will participate in the 22nd Central American and Caribbean Games, being held here from 14 to 30, arrived on Wednesday on Mexican soil.

"Part of the Cuban delegation, which is in excellent athletic shape, has arrived. They are looking to regain the hegemony that it has had since its first appearance in the regional event in Panama 1970, missing out only in San Salvador 2002 and 2010 Mayagüez by not attending," Antonio Becali, the president of Inder, told the accredited Cuban press in one of the halls of Veracruz International Airport.

"There will be an interesting rivalry with Mexicans. They have said they hope to win 129 titles. But evidently they have not counted on us, we will show them our real potential," said Becali.

Most members of the Cuban delegation are at the location, ready for action. Just over 300 of its members travelled on Wednesday morning the route from Havana, where they were seen off by the First Vice President of the Councils of State and Ministers, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermúdez and José Ramón Fernández, head of the Cuban Olympic Committee.

Before shaking hands with each of the athletes, coaches, judges and members of the medical team, Diaz-Canel said "on behalf of the Cuban people, which will follow closely what happens in the Central American and Caribbean Games, we want to express that we are convinced that you will reap new victories, new conquests for revolutionary sport, for the Nation, for the Revolution, and that it will be done so with high dignity and decorum.
