Guanabacoa: Land of Traditions and Legends
especiales
A unique place where old-fashioned stuffs have prevailed over avant-garde features.
Having great significance regarding religious issues, Guanabacoa has an important presence of African worships that have survived to our days: as the practice of Santeria in the Yoruba culture.
Guanabacoa takes its name from the Taino Indians and the name means “land of rivers and hills.”
Sugar and tobacco production cemented itself in the 17th and 18th centuries. In August 1743, the village was conferred the title of Villa of Our Lady of the Asuncion of Guanabacoa and the municipality’s Coat of Arms.
Cradle of great stars of Cuban culture —i.e. Ernesto Lecuona, Rita Montaner, Ignacio Villa (aka Bola de Nieve)— this municipality has several symbolic places that certainly makes attractive the idea of visiting it and investigate more on its transcendental history.
Carriages, bicycles, modern and ancient cars can be seen in the streets
Former local government of Guanabacoa. Headquarter of the local municipality government nowadays. The most important activities are held here.
The Church of Guanabacoa. Present as in almost every village in the country.
Central Park Jose Marti
The sale of flowers is also part of Guanabacoa due to its religious relevance
